It is the best Himalayan trekking and a breathtaking mountain view from day one and if you are an experienced mountaineer you can attempt Yala Peak (5500 meters) that can be climbed in 2 days by camping one night. It covers 1710 sq. km Langtang National Park, peaceful Tamang villages, and holy Gosaikunda Lake. About one-quarter of the park is covered with forests of oak, rhododendron, maple and it is a home of a variety of animals and birds. Mammals to be found in the Langtang National Park are Red Panda, Snow Leopard, Musk Deer, and Himalayan Tahr.

How many days must one set aside?

Langtang valley trek lies just about 19 miles from Kathmandu Valley, any kind of travellers- groups, couple, family or solo travellers can trek to Langtang Valley. Langtang Valley Trek is a short and easy trek and it takes 8 days to complete.

The starting point of Langtang trek

The starting point for Langtang Valley Trek is Syafrubesi. It takes 7 to 8 hours of drive from Kathmandu to Syafrubesi. We drive through the Trisuli river before reaching Dhunche and Langtang National Park.

The ending point of Langtang trek

The ending point for Langtang Valley is Syafrubesi. It takes 3 days reached Syafrubensi from Kyajin Ri. Many people returned to Thulo Syafru and trek Gosaikunda, and return through Sundarijal. It takes 6 days to return Sundarijal from Thulo Syafru.

Best time to trek

Langtang Valley trek in March to May 

In Nepal spring falls in mid-March to May. In spring season the forest also starts getting greenery and one of the second-best seasons in Nepal. You will get colourful experience in spring season where you find rhododendron and other flowers. You can get the best view of a snow-capped mountain in this season.

Langtang valley trek in September to November.

In these seasons you will get a spectacular view of the mountains and sky. October is the month where Nepal receives high numbers of tourist. In the season of September, you will get an opportunity to see a festival like Dashain and Tihar. It is one the biggest festival of Nepalese people.

Cost involved.

The cost of a local bus from Kathmandu to Syfrubesi bus service varies from 600-800 rupees depending on transportation companies. It may cost 1000 rupees if you decided to reach there through local jeep and around 15000 rupees through private jeep if you are group of 7-8 people.

Accommodation at Langtang Valley.

Langtang valley trek in Nepal is tea house trek where you will spend about a week in a tea house along the trekking route. On your trek to Langtang region, the tea house provides food, accommodation and other facilities like a hot shower, charging facilities, wifi. Most of the tea house trail is well-managed. Some of the tea houses provide facilities such as hot showers and modern toilets. With the change in place, the services you get is different. As you ascend higher such as Lama Hotel. Kyanjin Gompa the accommodation is basic. Depending on the altitude the services also limit because of remote places and unavailability of transportation.

The average daily cost for accommodation and meal.

The accommodation cost NPR 300-500 (3-5 USD) per night. It may cost more if you have a meal in the same tea house. Most of the tea house on the trail usually serves healthy, whole meals, snacks and drinks.

The morning meal of breakfast will cost you 5-6 USD in the higher region and cost 2-3 USD in the lower region. Dal, Bhat and Tarkari (a meal of steamed rice, lentils and fried seasonal vegetables) is a staple choice in most of the tea houses. There is other variation food available like noodles, mo:mo and fried rice etc. In the lower region, a healthy hot meal will cost around NPR 200-300 (2-3 USD) per plate. In the higher region, the same meal will cost NPR 400-600 (4-6 USD) per plate. There is other variation food available like noodles, mo:mo and fried rice etc. 

We recommend you to bring light snacks like granola bars, a chocolate bar for the trek. Most of the chocolate bars and snacks are easily available in Kathmandu. You will get them on the trail but at a higher cost.

Permit required for this trek and cost of the permits

Langtang Valley trek required two different types of permits. There are TIMS card and Langtang National Park permit. 

TIMS card 

There are three types of TIMS card. They are green, blue and pink. Individual, you will get the green card it cost $20, if you are a group of trekkers you will get the blue card which cost $10 and if you are SAARC national your pink TIMS card will cost only $6. You can get your TIMS card from Nepal Tourism Board in Kathmandu and Pokhara or from Tekkers’ Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN) Secretariat. TIMS is available by filling out the form. Take copies of your passport and two passports sized photo you get your TIMS card.

Langtang National Park Entry Permit.

You need a special permit to trek in this region- the Lantang National Park Permit. It cost $30 excluding 13% VAT. For the citizen of SAARC countries, you can get a permit for $15 excluding VAT. If the children under the age of 10, trekking in this region, do not need to pay charges for a permit. You can get Langtang valley permit from Tourism Board, Kathmandu or You can also get at the entry point Langtang Valley, Dunche.

Langtang valley trek itinerary

8 days Itinerary

  • 1: Kathmandu to Syafrubesi 

Syafrubesi is the initial point for trekking Langtang Valley. It takes around 7-8 hours drive from Kathmandu to Syafrubesi to cover 117km. There are many hotels and lodges in Syafrubesi.

  • 2: Syafrubesi to Lama Hotel, 2480m

A short ascend of 6 hours will take you to Lama Hotel. We will follow the trail through suspension bridge through Thulo Syfaru. It lead us to Lama Hotel

  • 3: Lama Hotel to Langtang Valley, 3420m

A short ascend uphill of 6 hours walk will lead us to Langtang Valley. The valley offers a breathtaking view of Langtang Lirung. The trail will lead through the forest where yak and wild goat can be seen gazing.

  • 4: Langtang Valley to Kyanjin Gompa, 3880m

Leaving Langtang Valley, we will climb uphill to Sindum and Yamphu. The routes take you through Laja Khola to arrive at the viewpoint which provides the breathtaking paranomic view of Kyanjin Gompa and the icefall of Lirung and Kinshung.

  • 5: Kyanjin Gompa to Kyanjin Ri, 4997m

Early morning around 6 am we will ascend to Kyanjin Ri, it takes around 3-4 hours to walk it will take to get to the summit to see the fantastic views of the upper Langtang Valley with a 360-degree view We will descend from Kyajin Ri to Kyajin Gompa and stay overnight at Kyajin Gompa. 

  • 6: Kyanjin Gompa to Lama Hotel

After having your breakfast you start to get down, this is a day back to Lama Hotel with the view of the different escape of mountain and Langtang Valley. 

  • 7: Lama Hotel to Syafrubesi

This is your day to end your walking in Himalaya wilderness after arrived in Syafrubesi of 5 hours walk.

  • 8: Syafrubesi to Kathmandu

This is a day we return to Kathmandu of 7 hours of driving enjoying the pleasant view of Majestic Mountain, waterfalls, and paddy fields that will take us to Kathmandu.
